Entry Level Tax Specialist

This permanent full-time position in a mid-sized accounting firm will report directly to the Tax Partner. The selected individual will be responsible for learning and applying technical skills, and working as part of a team carrying out tasks principally involved in tax compliance work. The candidate should be prepared to start immediately this fall.

Duties, responsibilities, and competencies:
The Entry Level Tax Specialist can expect to focus his or her efforts in the following areas:

  • Preparation and review of Canadian individual, partnership, corporate and trust/estate income tax returns;
  • Carry-out basic research using Taxnetpro and other tax databases, search engines and prepare short memoranda on findings;
  • Plan, schedule, and respond to basic tax queries from clients and tax authorities;
  • Preparation and review of government prescribed forms for Canadian individuals and corporate taxpayers
  • Assist senior tax specialist and tax partner in compliance work;
  • Assist in the development of establishing needed processes for automating certain tax functions.

As the entry-level tax specialist gains more confidence in the performance of his/her work, an expansion of the above areas is a necessity in order to build the interpersonal and technical skills necessary for the next progression of career responsibilities as a tax professional.   1. Knowledge of certain tax and accounting concepts
  2. Possesses good organizational skills and the analytical capability and intellectual curiosity to delve beyond the surface of a particular issue when using Boolean research skills;
  3. Ability to take on/perform a Notice To Reader mandate with little or no supervision
  4. Computer skills: Caseware, DT Max, Taxprep, Microsoft office
  5. Organizational skills to plan out the scheduled mandates

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has a minimum of 1-2 years work experience in an audit or tax work environment
  • Has a degree in accounting and has successfully achieved, or is well on their way toward completing the competencies required to obtain the CA/CPA designation.
  • Is later considering pursuing a Master’s degree in taxation or the CICPA In-Depth tax course
